2012 Tour de France, Stage 2 Results

Just about every team in the peloton had someone on the front of the peloton at some point of the final 10km of the 207.5km stage from Vise to Tournai but Sky was relatively anonymous in the final rush to the line. Instead it was Lotto-Belisol and Orica-GreenEdge that had the strength of numbers in the final kilometer. Greg Henderson charged into the front and delivered André Greipel to the 250 meter to go mark and that's when the giant German turned on the turbo... and very nearly claimed his second Tour stage win. But behind him was Mark Cavendish who judged the sprint to perfection and did what he does so well: win! That's 21 stage wins in six years for the reigning world champion. Goss, Veelers, Petacchi (Lampre-ISD), and Peter sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale) rounded out the next finishing four positions.

Fabian Cancellara finished 44th in the same group as Cavendish, he will continue to wear the yellow jersey in stage three.

Petacchi was quite satisfied with his result today saying, "As a first step it's not so bad, mainly because my legs had good feelings in the final part of the stage. I was satisfied about how I approached the last kilometers but Veelers passed me and took the position ahead of mine so I needed to launch again but by then Cavandish and Greipel were unreachable".

Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale) was 6th, conquering enough points to become the new leader of points classification and wearer of the green jersey (78 points versus 63 for Cavendish, second). "I’m glad to have taken the jersey," said Sagan. "I want to hold it as much as possible. I know that won’t be easy, as today it wasn’t easy to compete because of stress and dangers: it was clear in the first mass sprint that want to be in front of the group. However, it was a useful test to know how to sprint here at the Tour de France: I’m also here also for this, every chance is a good opportunity to learn something and not make mistakes in the next sprint.Today, Sagan began racing aboard a custom-painted "Tourminator” Cannondale Evo (click on photos to enlarge):

Tomorrow: Stage 3, the Tour enters France, Orchies-Boulogne-sur-Mer, 197 km. TdF analysis by Jean-François Pescheux:
"We are now in France and ready to start from Orchies, a familiar place for classics specialists. One could be forgiven for thinking we have come for the cobblestones of Paris-Roubaix, but we are actually going to ride straight away from them towards the hills of the Boulonnais. Six big climbs in 100 kilometres, four of which in the last 16 kilometres. This could mark the opening of hostilities in the Tour. There is no way the sprinters will be there at the finish, which will be decided at the same place as the French Championships won by Chavanel. I think the bunch will be smashed to smithereens."
